I think the history of India needed to be retold, not to take away any credit that has been granted to the heroes of the Indian National Congress by the post-independence historians, but to create some space to those who have not received their due despite making important contributions.
My purpose also includes to re-read the events of history in the light of what we see around us in modern times and try to understand where the roots of all this lies.
I wanted to list all the events which, in my understanding, contributed towards giving a shape to India as it is now. Events which might have been perceived as ordinary and not fear-reaching at the moment of occurrence might have turned out, in later years, to be a decisive turning point for a certain movement, philosophy or idea. Movements which were not thought would sustain the test of time might have proved to influence people generations later. Powerful ideologies of an earlier day might have withered away due to faulty demonstration or lack of leadership. My purpose is to highlight all of those, and also to pay sincere tribute to all those heroes whose efforts went undermined just because they did not get to taste success or enjoy power (and hence influence writing of history from their perspective).
